to conduct experiments on the moon for one lunar day

(1 lunar = 14 earth days)

Lunar South Pole

To explore Moon's south pole region
Coldest spots on the solar system
Not received sunlight for billions of years
Possibility of water ice in permanently shadowed areas
To understand the origin of life

Moon Missions Aim

Soft Landing
Roving on Lunar Surface
Study of Moon's Topography & mineralogy
Surface Chemical Composition

Chandrayaan 1

Was an Orbitor
Orbited 3400 times around the moon, remained operational for 312 days

Chandrayaan 2

Orbitor, Lander, Rover
Orbitor operational for a year

Orbitor

Will orbit the moon at an altitude of 100km
8 instruments on the orbiter
Box-shaped, orbiter mass-2379 kg
Solar panels capable of generating 1000w power
OHRC ( orbit high-resolution camera ) to conduct high-resolution observations on landing site
Structure manufactured by HAL

Lander ( Vikram)

To enable the delivery of Rover to Lunar surface
Developed to operate for 14 days or one lunar day
Constant communication with Indian Space Network
'Vikram' weigh-1471kg
Can generate 650w electricity
(Named 'Vikram' in honor of Dr. Vikram Sarabhai)

Rover( Pragyan)

Six wheeled Robotic Vehicle
Can travel 0.5 km at 1cm per second
Powered by solar energy
Weight 27 kg
Can generate 50w electric power

What happened at the last moment?
Around 1:51am Vikram loses connection
Communication lost just before 2.1km from the lunar surface
